Taichung Martyrs Shrine

Taichung Martyrs Shrine (臺中市忠烈祠)

Originally a Japanese Shinto shrine, it was converted in 1970 to a memorial to those killed after World War Two (WWII) during the handover of Taiwan to the new Republican Government from Japan (1945). You can visit the shrine next to Taichung’s Confucius temple (see map below).  Both provide a sense of tranquility among the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city in a peaceful garden setting.  Just outside the shrine is the Martyr’s Gate shown in the picture.

Getting There:

Walk up Taiwan Boulevard (台灣大道) passed McDonalds to the Taichung Train Station Taiwan Da Dao bus stop.  Take bus no. 81 (Ubus) to Taichung’s Ti Da Baseball stadium.  Jump off there and walk two minutes down Lixing (Lishing) road to the Martyrs shrine.
