Around National Art Museum in Taichung 國立台灣美術館

Taiwan’s National Art Gallery has different styles to suit all tastes, and best of all entrance is free.  Three floors contain art galleries ranging from calligraphy to national themes and abstract art.  Most exhibitions are tailored toward Taiwanese painters, not to be unexpected on an island focused on increasing its sense of self.  The originators of bubble tea, Chun Shui Tang, have a tea shop in the basement, and there’s also a play area inside for kids and a quiet reading room for some contemplative time. Note that it gets very busy here on the weekends.

Location

The gallery is located at the tail end of Taichung’s Calligraphy Greenway .  This is a long stretch of green parkland that meanders from the art museum all the way to the Botanical Gardens behind the Natural science museum.  Nearby is Dadun Cultural center, Feng Le sculpture park, and Great Mind Saxophone Gallery.  The CMP Block  Museum of Arts is a short 10 min walk to the North too.

A large number of the best saxophones in the world are made just north of Taichung in Houli.  However, for those unable to make it there, a large collection of exquisitely hand-painted saxophones are just a few minutes walk down from the art museum.  The Saxophone gallery has an airy space with a shop, exhibits and helpful staff.
